‘West Side Refresh’ event spreads awareness about mental health

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – The South Bend Empowerment Zone hosted a new event on Saturday with the goal of creating a community conversation about mental health.

The first-ever “West Side Refresh” kicked off at 11 a.m. at Washington High School and featured tons of activities, like a fun fair, vendor giveaways, face painting, bounce houses, a DJ, and food trucks.

With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, Saturday’s event was created to help destigmatize mental health conversations and provide families with the resources for personal wellness.

“On the west side of town, we want to let everyone know that mental health is important, and we’re here to provide you with resources for it,” says Adrienne Batteast, director of student wellness for the South Bend Empowerment Zone.

Saturday’s event, which was held in collaboration with Oaklawn, was free for the entire community.
