Vehicle using laser technology to gather data on road conditions in Newton

Must read

NEWTON, Kan. (KWCH) – Over the next few days, the City of Newton reported that a unique vehicle will be taking to its streets, using lasers to gather information on street conditions. Specifically, the city said IMS will be driving the modified vans on its streets “to gather data on the surface condition of [its] roads.”

“The vehicle uses lasers not visible to the human eye to detect cracks, potholes, and all surface conditions on the pavement,” the city said. “The process will take about a week, depending on the weather. They typically will not run when the streets are very wet. This information will put into a GIS (geographic information system) database that (the) city engineer and staff will use to analyze pavement conditions to schedule future road improvements.”
