Valley Health WIC program hosts pop-up farmer’s markets

CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The Valley Health WIC program is working to get fresh fruits and veggies in the community with pop-up farmers markets at the Cabell County Office.

They teamed up with WIC-approved farmers so recipients can buy locally grown produce with their benefits.

Robecca Bodimer with Bodimer Farms has plenty to share, so she became a WIC-approved farmer. WIC recipients can use their benefits at this pop up farmer’s market.

“We raise about 50 acres of produce, maybe a little more, and we’ve been doing it for like 30 years,” Bodimer said. “I just thought it would help. I think they need more famers, and the younger generation needs to eat more vegetables and learn how to fix that stuff for their kids, I just think it’s important.”

The main goal is accessibility, bringing the freshest options to one place.

“Easy access for them to come to the office, to spend the benefits instead of searching for a local farmer,” Bodimer said.

The WIC employees can help you shop for your family, and farmers can give you ideas on what to do with all of the fresh veggies.

“We eat this stuff too. Last night we had vegetable supper,” Bodimer said. “I think it just makes us healthier, and believe it or not, I’ve got four kids and one of their favorite dishes is squash and zucchini dishes.”

WIC recipients can be happy about knowing where the food comes from, and farmers like the Bodimers are happy about where the food is going.

If you don’t use WIC benefits you can still stop by and use cash at the market. Bodimer Farms will be back on July 25, and Rocky Knob Farms out of Wayne will be at the Cabell WIC office on July 23.
