UVM Health Network opens 2nd apartment building for workers

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A major employer in our region is trying to entice new employees with more housing in a competitive market.

On Tuesday, the UVM Health Network opened its second apartment building for employees.

This newest building, near Trader Joe’s in South Burlington, has 120 units. The first building, a block away on Market Street, has 61 units.

Two-thirds of the units are open to new employees to help relocate to Vermont, where a recent federal survey found home prices jumped the most in the country.

“The last thing we want is for someone to decline one of our offers because they can’t find a place to live,” said Jerald Novak, UVM’s chief people officer.

The network says the strategy is working and has been key in some new employees deciding to take the jobs.

Combined, the network has invested $9 million into employee housing.

The new building will also have a child care center in it. That’s slated to open this fall.
