The village where donkeys make deliveries and cars are banned

Must read

Clovelly, a picturesque fishing village in Devon, has been named one of the UK’s most Instagrammable spots due to its charming streets and seaside setting.

Despite having a small population of just 443 according to the 2011 census, this privately-owned village has become increasingly popular with tourists seeking a slice of idyllic coastal life.

The village’s cobbled streets and steep incline make it largely inaccessible for cars, with a car park provided at the top of the hill for both visitors and residents. From there, it’s a short stroll down the hill to the heart of the village.

In lieu of cars and delivery vans, the villagers employ a unique sledge system for receiving deliveries, with donkeys often spotted transporting supplies along the high street.

As Clovelly is privately owned, there is an entrance fee for visitors – £9.50 for adults and £5.50 for children over seven, while those under seven can enter free of charge, reports the Mirror.

The village’s history traces back to the Norman invasion when William the Conqueror took possession of the land before bestowing it upon his wife, Matilda of Flanders.

Ownership of the village remained within the Royal family until the 14th century when it was bought by Sir John Cary. The Cary family held onto the land until it was acquired by the Hamlyn family in 1738, who remain the current owners.

Clovelly, a quaint village in Devon, remained a hidden gem until Charles Kingsley’s novel “Westward Ho!” catapulted it into the limelight in the 19th century. Today, tourists are enchanted by its timeless charm.

With an impressive tally of 1,220 five-star reviews on TripAdvisor, one visitor said: “What an amazing little place. Thoroughly enjoyed a wander down seeing the donkeys/shops/history etc.”

“Wouldn’t recommend the walk back up the hill at seven months pregnant though. That was a challenge, but still very beautiful. A must-see if visiting the area.”

Another said: “Really wonderful afternoon out… beautiful village and interesting gardens. Loved the waterfall! Overall fantastic outing – highly recommended.”

Meanwhile, a third added: “Despite the rain, Clovelly didn’t disappoint. We had a lovely lunch in the tea rooms, then got the Range Rover up to the top. 30 years ago I walked up.”
