ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – With school out for the summer, teens no longer have the routine of a normal school day. However, doctors say that doesn’t mean teens can’t keep a healthy schedule over summer break.

Dr. Paula Cody, medical director of adolescent medicine at University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, shares helpful tips for teens and parents of teens to make it a safe and happy summer.

“During the summer time, its really important to keep a routine. A routine is very important for both physical and mental health. This routine includes keeping a sleep schedule, specifically getting up at the same time everyday so your not sleeping away the day,” says Cody.

Other health tips include:

  • Staying in a routine
  • Eating three meals a day
  • Social media can help teens stay connected but it is still important to put the phone down and go outside
  • Parents need to have honest conversations with their kids about risk-taking decisions like alcohol and drugs
  • Staying hydrated because of all the summer activities and it is good for overall health
