Technology to replace chain gangs is here. Will NFL finally use it?

Must read

For all the technological advancements in football over the years, the ball is still spotted by eye and measured by the chain gang.

Change is coming, however, with the NFL moving to an optical tracking system for line-to-gain rulings, according to a report by CBS Sports.

The system will be used in the 2024 preseason with the possibility of full implementation by the start of the regular season this year.

The NFL used the optical tracking system, which is designed to reduce human error spotting the ball, at MetLife Stadium and Hard Rock Stadium last season, according to CBS Sports. The league would have to install it in all 30 stadiums as well as those used for international games.

If the NFL isn’t pleased with the preseason run of optical tracking, its implementation could be pushed back to 2025, according to CBS Sports. It also reported the chain gang would still be used as a backup system that also gives players, coaches and fans a visual reference they’re accustomed to.
