Gio Castaing hit a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Novato High baseball team rallied out of a four-run hole for a 5-4 victory against No. 10 Miramonte in the North Coast Section Division III playoffs on Tuesday.
The No. 7 Hornets (15-11) trailed 4-0 after the first two innings but scored twice in the third and fourth innings to tie the game at 4-4. Scott Rios singled in the seventh to set the stage for Castaing’s winning hit.
Novato advances to face No. 2 seed San Marin in the quarterfinals. The Mustangs are set to host at 5 p.m. on Friday.
The Hornets started to rally in the third as Castaing was hit by a pitch then Griffin Vorhaus drew a walk. Castaing came around to score on an error by the pitcher than Vorhaus scored on a wild pitch.
Novato loaded the bases in the fourth on consecutive singles by Cash Campbell, Dominic Scafani, and Trevor Cleary. The Hornets pushes runs across on a fielder’s choice off Rios’ bat then a sacrifice bunt by Owen Van Behren to tie the game.
- Tyler Keehn had four hits and Cole Chamberlain had two, including a home run, to lift No. 2 San Marin to a 7-2 win against No. 15 Analy in the D-III playoffs on Tuesday. San Marin (19-8) jumped on the Tigers right away, scoring four times in the first inning and twice in the second to grab a 6-0 lead. Keehn, Chamberlain, and Matthew Baldino had two RBIs apiece for San Marin, which hosts Novato at 5 p.m. on Friday.
Prep softball
Redwood had no answer for Alhambra’s Keira Sullivan who went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored as the Giants bowed out in the first round of the NCS D-II playoffs following a 6-1 loss Tuesday.
Gia Meyers and Kait Christensen had two hits apiece and combined to generate Redwood’s run in the bottom of the first. Meyers hit a two-out single then Christensen followed with an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1.
Alhambra (10-12) went in front 2-1 in the top of the second. Redwood pitcher Stella Belluomini worked two innings with three hits, three walks and two earned runs against two strikeouts. Lily Cox pitched the rest of the game for Redwood (17-9), allowing six hits and four earned runs against five strikeouts.
