HAILEY, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — With May 7th being Fentanyl Awareness Day, the South Central Public Health District held a town hall on Fentanyl overdose and addiction in Hailey.

In 2021 and 2022, 381 Idahoans lost their lives because of an overdose. According to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, 188 of these deaths were due to Fentanyl.

The town hall talked about the misuse of Fentanyl and other opioids, and what you should do to help someone who has overdosed.

A panel held representatives from the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office, Men’s Second Chance Living, Blaine County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Blaine County Coroner’s Office and Hailey EMS.

Taylor Bybee, from the South Central Public Health District, explains how addiction can be avoided, “Basically, first of all, is to avoid illicit substances as we’re seeing it being it laced with all types of illicit substances such as methamphetamines, cocaine, illegally made pills and so the best way is just not to use at all and just to avoid substances unless they are given specifically by a pharmacist.”

This event also covered how to use Naloxone to reverse an overdose properly.
