COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – The South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA) announced Tuesday they approved grants totaling over $25 million to infrastructure projects across the state.

The grants will fund 36 projects in 22 different counties with a primary focus on pressing upgrades and planning studies of water systems, wastewater systems and storm water drainage facilities. Officials noted that over 60% of the projects receiving the May 2024 grant awards will reach rural and distressed communities.

Several projects in the Midlands were listed as receiving $1 million investments, the highest amount RIA allocates to one specific project. These include:

  • Barrineau Public Utilities Company in Turbeville
  • City of Orangeburg
  • City of Bishopville
  • Town of Batesburg-Leesville

Other investments around the Midlands include $771,375 to the Newberry County Water and Sewer Authority, $250,000 to Orangeburg County and $250,000 to the City of Sumter.

RIA said their grant awards are selected based on the severity of the applicant’s problem, the expected impact of the grant money and the project’s feasibility.

“To ensure all communities and businesses have the opportunity to thrive, we must address the state’s critical infrastructure needs and plan for long-term viability,” said Bonnie Ammons, Executive Director of RIA. “More than 10 years of RIA grants demonstrate the profound impact that strategic investment and proactive planning have on our communities as we build a stronger future for all South Carolinians.”
