Sen. Sanders advocates for BIPOC representation in health care

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WCAX) – Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is highlighting the need for more BIPOC health care workers.

While insurance woes are a large problem, the senator says the shortage of medical professionals is also a concern – especially in communities of color.

According to Sanders, despite making up almost 14% of the population, only 5% of doctors and 6% of nurses are Black. The problem also persists for Latino and Native American populations.

Sanders says combating that shortage is vital to fighting the health care crisis.

“A study has shown that when Black, Latino and Native American patients have access to Black, Latino and Native American doctors, their health outcomes substantially improve. They’re more likely to receive preventative services. They’re more satisfied with their care, and they’re more likely to live longer and happier lives,” said Sanders.

According to Sanders, the average life expectancy is about 5 years lower for Black Americans and 11 years lower for Native Americans than for White Americans.
