LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) – Kids are heading back to school and athletes are getting prepared for the sports seasons ahead.

South Central Regional Medical Center is reminding athletes, coaches and parents about safety protocols while on the field.

The hospital said there’s generally an increase in sports-related injuries after the summer months.

Hospital officials said they wanted to remind folks it’s critical for athletes to maintain fitness during the summer to avoid injuries during game season.

However, that doesn’t mean they need to over train.

“We want to make sure that we have that acclimation period so that they are prepared for their sport,” said Kirk Landrum, SCRMC sports medicine director.

They said kids should employ a balanced approach of strength, flexibility and endurance exercises along with proper nutrition.

Some local athletes train at the hospital’s Sports Performance and Rehabilitation Center over the summer.

“We want to make sure we’re implementing the proper training programs for their sport’s specific needs,” said Landrum. “We also want to make sure their acclimation to the heat is where it needs to be at the time.

“That’s one of the biggest things about us playing in south Mississippi, it’s always hot here when we start our summer sports whether it’s soccer, football – whichever ones we have outdoors.”

The Sports Performance and Rehabilitation Center also has a injury clinic for athletes from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturdays during football season .
