ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Since the COVID-19 pandemic, health professionals have witnessed high rates of mental health challenges in children. A new center in Rochester is hoping to become a safe space for kids and their families in crisis.
The Brighter Days Pediatric Mental Health Center is the first of its kind in upstate New York.
It’s for patients under 18, looking for immediate care options that aren’t emergency room visits. Blaine Hayward Collins, 14, spent eight months in a mental health facility.
“It was hectic, but I got through it,” said Collins.
Sharing his story at the Brighter Days center’s grand opening, Collins explains how a space like this would’ve helped him.
“I look forward to seeing more individualized, more comfortable, more flexible and hopefully more beds. Care set to individual needs,” said Collins.
Inside the center is designed with younger patients in mind. Waiting areas and patient rooms are complete with support services, all designed to reduce the stress, loneliness and financial burdens associated with pediatric mental health challenges.
Around 3,000 patients are expected to use the facility each year.
Dr. Michael Scharf says he’s already seeing patients across the state and expects that to increase.
“We’re optimistic and hopeful that other regions will copy,” said Dr. Scharf. “We’re celebrating the first but not the last.”
As it becomes easier to talk about mental health and share our experiences, Collins is hopeful about where the industry is heading, but has a message for anyone out there still struggling.
“Don’t quit the walk, keep going and keep pushing,” said Collins.
Brighter Days Pediatric Mental Health Urgent Care Center opens July 15.
It provides care from noon – 7 p.m., seven days a week.
