Narrow victory: Canutillo ISD secures $386 million for school renovations and technology

Saturday’s passage of $386 million in funds for Canutillo ISD (CISD) has leaders there exuberant.

Life is about competition, continuous improvement and getting better. And now with state of the art facilities, fixing our roofs, our HVAC, getting our safety [and] security for our kids. We welcome it.

Voters in Canutillo had to approve or reject two proposals. Proposition A would give CISD $379 million for school repairs, school relocations, security upgrades and career training. Proposition B was worth $7.2 million, relating to technology infrastructure. Both measures passed, after failing in two previous votes.

This round of voting was still very close, with Proposition A passing by less than 40 votes. Proposition B was even closer. The $386 million is to be raised by increasing property taxes in the district. However, some residents feel taxes are already too high.

“It’s always a tough one when these bonds come up because ‘it’s for the kids’. But same time, we have to manage our limited resources we have. As a property owner, it’s really tough to see the taxes go up, up and up,” Matt Stopana, a resident of Canutillo told KFOX14. “I mean, it the frustrating part is that you never own your house. Even if you work hard, you pay off your mortgage. You don’t own it. You still have to pay those property taxes every year.”
