RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – When having surgery the patient hopes for steady hands and precise cuts.
Thanks to some new technology at Monument Health, those same hopes are now being realized in the fight against breast cancer.
Monument Health will now be using the MOLLI System, a new technology simplifying breast cancer removal surgery and allowing for a better patient experience. Instead of having a wire placed before surgery, a magnet is placed allowing for more precise localization.
“When a patient needs breast-conserving surgery they get this seed implanted and then we have a tablet and a wand system that the surgeon uses in the operating uses much like GPS to find the target and then are able to remove it and plan out a surgery that not only gets rid of the cancer but allows thyme to plan out a surgery that minimizes and residual scarring and allows for really aesthetical and cosmetically optimal results,” Inventor and Founder of the MOLLI System Ananth Ravi said.
Not only does the MOLLI System allow for a more aesthetically pleasing result and precise localization, but also simplifies the procedure since the patient can have the magnet placed up to 30 days before surgery.
“I think having one less thing they have to worry about or go through the day of surgery, I just think it’s really helpful for them,” Monument Health Breast Cancer Surgical Oncologist Dr. Ashlea Semmens said.
Monument Health is one of more than 180 hospitals using the new technology and over 20,000 patients have benefited from the MOLLI system.
