Mark Wood twice breaks record for fastest over in England

Must read

By his third over, Wood had hit 97.1mph with a short ball that opener Mikyle Louis did well to duck inside. A few balls later, though, Louis aimed a slog off Shoaib Bashir and was well caught by Harry Brook running back from mid-off.

If there was such a thing as an assist in cricket, Wood would have been awarded one, because extreme pace can cause even set batsmen to seek a release when they get down the other end.

Each ball from Wood was greeted with an intake of breath from a capacity crowd at Trent Bridge, who then waited excitedly for Wood’s speed to be shown on the big screen. Across his four-over opening spell, not a single ball was below 90mph.
