Jack Brooks has decided to end his county career where it all began having signed for Oxfordshire for this season’s National Counties T20 competition.
Brooks retired from first-class cricket at the end of last season after a distinguished career in which he took more than 650 wickets in all formats during stints with Northamptonshire, Yorkshire and Somerset and won two County Championship titles during his six years at Headingley.
It is a career that Brooks never envisaged when he first played county cricket for Oxfordshire as a ten-year-old 30 years ago, but he has fulfilled a promise that would return to his roots once his first-class days were over.
As he did not make his Northamptonshire debut until he was 25, and he continued playing until he had passed his 39th birthday, Oxfordshire have had to wait longer than expected for Brooks to rejoin them.
“I didn’t imagine that I would play professionally until I was 39. Chris Clements who was Oxfordshire’s chairman is a good friend of my old man and he always had in mind that I would come back and play or have some sort of role with the county,” Brooks said.
“I’m a proud Oxfordshire lad through and through. Throughout my professional career I made it clear that I was proud of where I was from and championed Oxfordshire cricket and the other Oxfordshire lads who have come through the system and also gone pro.
“When I was at Yorkshire and we won the County Championship twice they made a big thing about winning it with ten Yorkshiremen and me. I was the overseas player if you like. I was always Oxford-born Jack Brooks in any report on Yorkshire. I quite liked that because it made me stand out a bit more.”

8.30am – Good morning from an overcast Headingley, where we look set for a start on time for our fifth round Vitality County Championship clash with Glamorgan.
Mind you, if you believe weather forecasts, we might not get much beyond midday, with plenty of double rain dots on the hour-by-hour predictions through until 7 or 8 o’clock this evening.
We shall see if that comes to pass.
Anyway, Yorkshire are going in search of their first win after three draws and a defeat. Glamorgan, under new leadership this season, are doing the same. They have played one less and have drawn three from three.
The Welsh side are actually bottom of the Division Two table at present.

They are captained by former Yorkshire loanee batter Sam Northeast, a man with a triple century to his name already this summer (against Middlesex at Lord’s).
Their coach is New Zealander Grant Bradburn.
Glam, or Glammy if you want – a former county of Ottis Gibson’s during his playing days, have signed a couple of overseas players. One has arrived, the other hasn’t yet.
Pakistani fast bowler Mir Hamza has featured, but Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne is yet to arrive.
This will be Harry Brook’s last early-season appearance for Yorkshire before he links up with England to prepare for the T20 World Cup next month. In truth, it could well be his last appearance of 2024 altogether given the busy schedule ahead.
Joe Root will stay with Yorkshire for the next couple of months or so, and this weekend sees him face his younger brother Billy, the Glamorgan left-handed batter.
