MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – In honor of National Nurses Week, UW Health hosted a celebration for its staff Tuesday night with this year’s Nurse Excellence Awards.

Thirteen nurses were recognized for their compassion, care and dedication to their work.

But organizers say the event was bittersweet.

Nurse Nichole Warner worked in the Infectious Disease Clinic. She passed away in a car accident in December of 2022.

Due to the pandemic, Nichole was not able to be recognized until this year.

She was honored with the Specialty Care Nurse Excellence Award.

Nichole’s coworkers say she meant so much to everyone she met, both staff and her patients.

“She’s a tremendously important person and it means so much to have her recognized by others for all the wonderful things she did for our patients and for greatness as a nurse,” said UW Health Physician Dr. Jeannina Smith, who nominated Nichole for the award.

Nichole’s mom accepted the award on her behalf.

She said Nichole would have been thrilled to receive the honor.
