EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – Friday night, a special concert was held for health care workers laid-off by the HSHS and Prevea closures.

The L.E. Phillips Senior Center hosted “Eggplant Heroes”, a folk music group in the Chippewa Valley. They performed for dozens of community members.

Doug Mell, secretary for the L.E. Phillips Senior Center board of directors, said the event was free to any laid-off health care worker. The center is also offering those who lost their jobs during the healthcare shutdown free memberships. The center has given out 50 free memberships so far this year.

“Some of the proceeds from this event will help support those free registrations. We’re letting all HSHS and Prevea people in for free tonight. We’re trying to do something to lighten their load a little bit,” Mell said.

Mell said the board hopes events like this will get more people involved with the L.E. Phillips Senior Center. The board also plans to hold a resource fair in September.
