TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Kansas Health Institute’s interactive map will break down KanCare data.

According to Kansas Health Institute (KHI) officials, in their latest edition of “A Kansas Twist,” a KHI publication about national topics impacting Kansas, KHI analyzed KanCare renewal data as of April 30, the most recent and available, and developed an interactive map to show Medicaid unwinding status by age group and county.

“The interactive map provides a detailed breakdown that helps Kansans understand the demographics and geographic distribution of those affected by the unwinding process,” said Sheena Schmidt, KHI senior analyst.

KHI officials said Medicaid continuous enrollment associated with the federal Public Health Emergency ended on March 31, 2023, in a process called “unwinding,” which requires re-review of participant Medicaid eligibility. Those no longer deemed eligible or those who fail to meet eligibility deadlines may lose access to the federally funded health coverage program, also known as discontinued. The Kansas 12-month window to comply began with April 2023 reviews. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has extended unwinding through June 30, 2025. Kansas has completed its unwinding process as of May 31, 2024, but will still use any waiver flexibilities granted under the guidance. Learn more about this federal guidance.

KHI officials said the KHI’s interactive map breaks down renewals approved and discontinued, those in the reinstatement window and those for whom a new application is required. As of April 30, there were 318,791 approved and 75,532 individuals who have had their Medicaid coverage discontinued. Another 15,078 members were in the reinstatement window and have 90 days to submit their renewal for review. If they are determined eligible, they may have their coverage backdated. Also, 75,420 members have been placed in the “new application required” category because their reinstatement window has passed.
