Janhvi Kapoor’s cricket-inspired sari is proving her stance in the method-dressing debate

Jahnvi Kapoor made a striking appearance at the New Delhi promotions of her upcoming film, Mr. & Mrs. Mahi. Kapoor wore a custom cricket sari by Torani, styled by Ami Patel. This sartorial choice echoed the film’s cricket theme, showcasing an embroidered scallop wicket and ball border on organza, paired with pineapple leather. The striped design of the sari, inspired by the cricket pitch, was a testament to Kapoor’s role and her thematic promotional looks.

The film, one of the year’s most anticipated releases, is set to hit theatres on 31 May 2024. Directed by Sharan Sharma, it features Kapoor as a doctor who undergoes rigorous training to become a cricketer. Kapoor’s approach to promoting the film by method dressing draws inspiration from Hollywood actor Zendaya. Renowned for her role in Challengers and Dune, the It-girl has set the bar high with her thematic promotional outfits, blending her fashion choices with the essence of her characters.

Kapoor’s promotional ensemble by Torani is a prime example of this method dressing trend. The sari, with its cricket-inspired motifs, was not just a fashion statement but a clever nod to her character in the film. Kapoor has been seen embracing this thematic approach in other instances too, such as sporting a top emblazoned with the number 6—a direct reference to her character’s jersey number in ‘Mr. & Mrs. Mahi’.

“As actors, there’s considerable emphasis on our appearance and attire. If we can leverage that to draw attention to our films, then why not,” says Kapoor in a recent interview on her promotional strategy and her bid to method dressing. This philosophy has been embraced by other notable actors as well. Alia Bhatt, for instance, showed a similar approach during the promotions of Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani and Gangubai Kathiawadi, dressing in alignment with her characters’ styles to enhance audience engagement.
