New Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 saw Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerging as the winners of the season, ending a decade-long wait and lifting their third IPL title on Sunday. The big final win came against Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) who were skittled on a paltry 113 runs, courtesy of the KKR pacers who came good against the tricky Chepauk track. Coming out to chase, it was a cakewalk for the KKR batters, who on the back of half-centurion Venkatesh Iyer registered a comfortable eight-wicket win.

The 17th edition of the IPL will go down as one of the most memorable of all majorly due to its frequent high-scoring encounters, as several batters were up to setting a new template in T20 cricket. Gone is the time when 180 was considered a “mammoth” total as what the cricket fraternity witnessed was an extreme thrashing of the bowlers, due to which most of the records that were broken were all batters’ exploits. The fans in the stands were thoroughly entertained witnessing some mammoth totals. Here’s a look at all the major records that were overcome.

2024 season roundup

Highest run rate (9.56)

Unlike the previous seasons, this season had to bring the highest runs per over (RPO). It was somewhat expected during the season itself as almost every match became a high-scoring affair with several questioning the flat pitches and the curators. Taking into account the RPO of the previous four seasons, it remained in the gaps between 8 and 9 but the extreme power hitting this season breached the 9 mark.

Most 200+ totals (41)

As mentioned earlier, the scores of 170s and 180s are a thing of the past as the ten participating teams partnered for most 200+ totals (41) in IPL history. The likes of SRH, KKR, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) posted 200+ scores six times and the 250+ totals were reached as many as 8 times with SRH spearheading it on three occasions.

Most sixes hit (1260)

As mindboggling as it might seem, the number of maximums (1260) soared in the IPL 2024. SRH’s Abhishek Sharma ended up hitting the most sixes (42) and bagged the award for the same as well. The number was 1124 in the previous season.

Most individual 100s scored (14)

While RR’s Jos Buttler struck two hundred this season, the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Jonny Bairstow, Travis Head, Suryakumar Yadav, Will Jacks, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Sunil Narine, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, and Marcus Stoinis did it once for their respective sides, making it 14 centuries in total.

Highest ever IPL total (287/3 SRH vs RCB in Bengaluru)

Believe it or not, SRH were just 13 runs short of touching the 300-run mark when they posted 287/3 against RCB at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. This is the highest IPL total in history which came a mere 18 days after SRH had broken the highest IPL total record by scoring 277 against MI. Yes! They tumbled their very own record in the same season.

Highest successful T20 chase (262 by PBKS vs KKR Kolkata)

Punjab Kings (PBKS), on the back of Jonny Bairstow, chased down the mammoth 262-run target set by KKR at the Eden Gardens, leaving their fans stunned. Bairstow struck a magnificent hundred (108* off 48) leading the Punjab charge and registering themselves for highest ever target successfully chased in Men’s T20 cricket. The record was previously held by South Africa who chased 259 runs against West Indies in Centurion last year.

Highest aggregate in a T20 match (549 runs SRH vs RCB in Bengaluru)

The match that saw SRH plunder 287 runs also saw a daunting response from RCB who scored 262 runs in their stipulated 20 overs as SRH won the game by 25 runs. Had it been a couple of overs more, SRH would have been at the receiving end but yes… that’s how the season has panned out. Unpredictable! The 20 over per-side game saw 549 runs scored as bowlers were taken to the cleaners after almost each delivery. This stands as the highest aggregate in T20 cricket. The previous record comes from the same season when SRH had scored 277 vs MI who in response struck 246 to make it 523 runs in total.
