Indra will supply Surface Awareness Initiative (SAI) systems for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States, the civil aviation authority that manages the country’s air traffic. The FAA has approved Indra’s SAI solution, called AeroBOSS, which allows the company to provide its innovative technology for surveillance and monitoring of surface aircraft, as well as to reduce the risk of runway incursions, which have increased significantly in recent years.

The solution could be delivered to more than 250 FAA-managed manned air traffic control towers, and approximately 200 additional airports, managed through the FAA’s Federal Contract Tower programme, upon request.

The FAA has included Indra’s SAI technology in its Qualified Product List (QPL) for procurement and deployment at US airports. This innovative solution also uses ADS-B surveillance technology via radar to receive aircraft position data, and satellite connections and 5G networks to transmit it, informing air traffic controllers of aircraft movements on the surface. The system contributes to comprehensive safety management at airports and reduces the risk of surface incidents.

Indra has successfully completed the first deployment of its UPS system at Dallas Love Field airport in Texas. This technology not only enhances automated surface surveillance through the ADS-B surveillance system and cloud connectivity, but is also characterised by its rapid deployment and implementation capability.

Indra’s SAI system allows air traffic controllers to have a complete picture of the situation and position of aircraft when they are on the apron and runways to effectively prevent incidents and provide safety for aircraft, passengers and airport staff. Indra expects large and medium-sized airports in the United States to adopt this technology in the coming years.

On the other hand, Indra has renewed its exclusive supply agreement with the FAA for DME systems, which guide aircraft during their approach to the airport or along their route, of which it has already supplied more than 250 units.

With the signing of this framework agreement, Indra reaffirms its position in the US market as a leader in technological solutions to modernise air traffic and define the way the skies will be flown and managed in the future, with the commitment to achieve safer, more efficient and sustainable aviation.

In addition to the FAA, Indra also provides air navigation support systems in the United States to the US Air Force and the US Navy.

Indra has equipped more than 11,000 air traffic facilities around the world and is one of the few companies in the world with a portfolio of next-generation solutions capable of managing a flight door-to-door, from take-off to arrival at its destination, and its technology ensures the safety of 85% of the passengers who take a flight every day in the world, making it one of the world leaders in the sector.
