The ICC put USA Cricket on notice for “non compliance” in one of the major decisions taken at its Annual General Meeting in Colombo on Monday.

At the four-day Annual Conference that concluded with the AGM on Monday, the ICC also decided to conduct a “review into the delivery” of T20 World Cup that took place last month, especially the USA leg of the tournament.

“The ICC Board confirmed that there will be a review into the delivery of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. This will be overseen by three directors, Roger Twose, Lawson Naidoo and Imran Khwaja who will report back to the Board later in the year,” read a statement from the ICC.

The global body for the sport is reportedly conducting a probe into T20 World Cup due to alleged overshooting of budgets, especially in the USA leg of the tournament which included all of India’s group-stage matches.

USA hosted several important fixtures in the 2024 T20 World Cup, including the marquee India-Pakistan Group A clash at the Nassau County International Stadium in New York. AP

As for non-compliance, it’s not just the American cricket board that’s in trouble, with the ICC also formally putting Cricket Chile on notice. Both USA as well as Chile will get 12 months to get their act right and will be under the observation of a “Normalisation Committee” setup by the global governing body. Continuous non-compliance after being put on notice will lead to suspension.

“USA Cricket and Cricket Chile have been formally put on notice and have 12 months to rectify their current non-compliance with the ICC Membership Criteria. Neither Member is considered to have in place a fit-for-purpose detailed governance and administrative structure and systems.

“The ICC Americas office will work with Cricket Chile to support them in remedying their non-compliance. The Board agreed that a Normalisation Committee comprising of Board and Management representatives will be set up to oversee and monitor USA Cricket’s compliance roadmap and the ICC Board will reserve its right to suspend or expel the Member for continued non-compliance,” the ICC added.

The Annual Conference took place days before the start of the Paris Olympics, and with cricket set to return to the world’s biggest sporting event in Los Angeles 2028, the theme of the four-day event that was attended by all 108 ICC Members was “capitalizing on the Olympic opportunity”.

The ICC also reaffirmed its commitment towards achieving a balance in the men’s and women’s game by announcing an expansion of the Women’s T20 World Cup from 12 to 16 teams starting with the 2030 edition.
