Sainsbury’s shoppers will be able to earn extra Nectar points when using their loyalty card after a purchase – but for a limited time only.

Financial expert Martin Lewis informed customers of the offer via MoneySavingExpert, advising that the promotion should be available in their email.

A post read: ‘Unlike most other offers of this type, where you need to buy specific items, all you need to do here is spend £1 or more at a time in a few separate transactions.

‘So it’s a no-brainer if you were planning to do that anyway.’

Anyone who is lucky enough to qualify for the challenge will be required to opt to ensure they can take part – which can be done via the Nectar app.

If you fail to do so, you will not earn any bonus points but can still receive the regular amount of Nectar points you would be entitled to based on how much you spend.

The promotion does not apply to every customer with a Nectar membership, meaning that some unlucky shoppers will unfortunately miss out.

Those who have been lucky enough to be able to take part should see a ’tile’ in their Nectar app – which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store.

Customers who qualify and opt into the scheme need to spend just £1 or more with any purchase until the offer expires on August 6 – and can do so in store or online.

Anyone wishing to do so online must double check that their Nectar and Sainsbury’s account are linked to secure the bonus.

Customers could earn 100s of extra points – which varies for each customer – but one example saw an offer of 700 bonus points (worth £3.50).

It comes as Sainsbury’s rival chain Tesco allowed Clubcard holders the chance to receive rewards worth up to £100 after it released its latest set of ‘Clubcard Challenges’.

Shoppers can can complete up to 10 challenges, with a total of up to £50 worth of Clubcard points able to be claimed during six-week campaign – but there is a way to double this so you get £100 worth of points if you are a lucky winner.

You can double the total overall value of your points by spending them with a Tesco Reward Partner, which include over 100 brands, such as Pizza Express, Hotels.com and Disney+.

The challenges will vary for each participant and can range from tasks such as ‘spend £20 on our Summer BBQ range over the next 6 weeks’ to ‘spend £10 on plant-based meals’.

While Tesco has created 20 different spending challenges for customers, they can only take on ten before they expire on Sunday August 25.

Lizzie Reynolds, Group Membership and Loyalty Director at Tesco said: ‘We are constantly looking for ways to make Clubcard work harder for our customers. With Clubcard Prices on around 8,000 products, it is saving customers up to £360 off the annual cost of their groceries.

‘Personalisation is about using what we know about customers to make their experience better and our rewards more helpful and we’re very excited to see how our customers respond to Clubcard Challenges.’
