HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii’s Department of Health Food Safety Branch is notifying the public over potential health risks of oysters from the Republic of Korea.

They say they could be contaminated with possible norovirus. FDA officials advised Friday against selling, serving and consuming the oysters.

The oysters are a product of Central Fisheries Co. Ltd., and have a lot code of # C-20230228. DOH officials say they were harvested on Feb. 28, 2023 from Designated Area No. 2, and have a use-by date of Feb. 28, 2025.

Some of the frozen, raw products were distributed to restaurants and retailers in Hawaii, California, and possibly other states.

Eating foods contaminated with norovirus can lead to potentially severe illnesses, especially in those with compromised immune systems. Side effects can include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain. Other symptoms include fever, headache, and body aches, DOH officials say.

They added symptoms develop anywhere from 12 to 48 hours from being exposed, and most people recover in one to three days.

If you have a bag of the impacted items, you should return them to the place of purchase.
