Gujarat Titans batting coach Gary Kirsten has created a furore on social media after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) shared a video of Kirsten’s virtual interaction with the national team players on Sunday. However, this has led to fans fuming and many questioning his commitment due to his current IPL coaching duties.

Kirsten, who was the head coach of the Indian cricket team when the men in blue won the World Cup in 2011, was recently appointed as Pakistan’s head coach in April 2024.

This has resulted in him interacting with the Pakistan team virtually, a move that has not gone down well with a section of the fanbase.

“He is the head coach of Pakistan and is guiding them through video calls. What on earth is happening?” one user wrote on social media.

“Is it a joke” questioned another.

“How do players learn from a coach through a laptop screen?” asked one fan.

However, another fan took a nuanced approach and wrote, “Gary Kirsten’s expertise is certainly being put to good use! It’s impressive to see him balancing his role as the batting coach of Gujarat Titans while also guiding Pakistan as their head coach through video calls.”

Meanwhile, Kirsten has not even taken the hot seat, but his credentials and abilities are already being questioned. Out of favour Pakistan player Ahmed Shehzad had slammed Kirsten’s statement on Geo News and said that he sounded like a weak coach. “Gary Kirsten is a renowned coach but he will be fed information by those who will select the team. He does not have a base in Lahor,e nor has he grown up in Pakistan to understand the nature of different players,” said Shehzad, who was Pakistan’s first T20I century-maker.

“At the end of the day, those involved with PCB are the ones who will be guiding him and doing all of this 2 years will have passed by. Already he has made a statement that I did not like. Kirsten said if we do not win the upcoming T20 World Cup then we might do well in the next two,”
