NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – Great Plains Health demonstrated how to stop the bleed in traumatic situations by hosting a training event at the North Platte Recreation Center on Wednesday.

Great Plains Health Trauma Coordinator Kellie Mahanes said that stopping bleed areas will not only save people’s lives, but also increase the survival rate of the victim that is injured. The main causes for deep bleeds are usually from lacerations and amputations.

“This training is important,” Mahanes said. “For people how to stop a person from bleeding, when they are injured.”

Mahanes said the process of stopping the bleed takes three steps:

  • First, is to apply pressure to the area.
  • Second, is to pack the wound with gauze or other material that is on hand.
  • Third, apply a tourniquet and call 911.
