NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. The Food and Drug Administration calls it a time to bring awareness to the unique challenges that racial and ethnic minorities in the U.S. face when it comes to mental illness.

According to the FDA in 2020, fewer than one in every two African American adults got care for mental health.

Dr. Jerez Mitchell, president of Mind, Body, and Soul Ministry at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, and Dr. Shanelle Fields, founder of The Healing Group, LLC, share more information about why there is such a stigma in the Black community when it comes to seeking help for mental wellness.

If you want to know more about what to expect from a therapy session, there is a free workshop happening at the end of the month.

The “What is Therapy: An Explanation about Counseling and Healing” Mental Health Fair takes place Saturday, July 27. The hours are 10 a.m. To 12 p.m. at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in North Charleston.
