Essentia Health welcomes new robotic surgery machines

DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) – A Duluth hospital has some new helping hands in the surgical field, but that assistance comes in the form of artificial intelligence (AI).

Essentia Health held a “Meet the Robots” event on Tuesday and invited people to get hands-on demonstrations of some new state-of-the-art tools.

Surgeons at Essentia are now putting four robotic surgical tools into use, including the Monarch, the Da Vinci, the Mazor, and the Mako systems.

Each system is designed to help trained surgeons with specific types of surgery including knee replacements, cardiothoracic surgeries, bone cutting and grafting, and lung cancer diagnosis.

None of these robotic systems work without highly trained surgeons and medical professionals, but they are intended to make procedures easier.

”They’re able to use these robots to minimize the amount of time it takes us to do the surgery as well as pinpoint precision in terms of millimeters,” said Stacy Lund, Senior Operations Supervisor for Surgery. “It’s no longer a matter of what’s right or what’s best, it’s a matter of how we can do what we need to do in the most efficient manner and that’s how these robots really help us.”

Essentia leaders say their facilities house some of the busiest robotic surgeons in the state, making them well-versed in the realm of AI and technology-aided surgeries.

Essentia is also inviting community members to check out this new technology for themselves, you can stop by the St. Mary’s Medical Center atrium between 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesday.
