BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Dozens of seniors are seeing health benefits by taking line dancing classes weekly.

Oak Street Health’s Rickwood Field Center hosts line dancing classes every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. The classes are led by Tracy Williams. She said the group of dancers are not ordinary seniors! She said many of them have lost weight, lowered their cholesterol and have seen their A1C numbers come down. The group has also helped build community.

“And then the community that’s been built. Some of them are friends out here that hang out outside of senior fit. Some of them go to church together, some of them have birthday parties and they invite each other so this is phenomenal. It can’t be measured. The benefits of this truly can’t be measured,” said Williams.

Health officials say moving your body during your later years can lower your chances of heart attack and stroke. Ahmed Mohiuddin is the senior medical director of Alabama for Oak Street Health. He said the classes are like a party.

“It’s Wednesday mornings but in their younger days, it may have been Friday nights. It feels like a party. There are smiles everywhere, everyone is really connected, everyone is having a really great time,” said Mohiuddin.

Classes are open to the public. You can RSVP here.
