Douglas County Health Dept. issues West Nile season warning

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The Douglas County Health Department is urging the public to report instances of standing water as West Nile season approaches.

In an announcement on Tuesday, the DCHD is urging the public to report standing water in the wake of the recent flooding and heavy rains.

This is because mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, and are known vectors of West Nile virus.

“If you are concerned about standing water near your home, contact us. Our sanitation team will assess and, if needed, apply larvicide to eliminate mosquito larvae before they become adults,” DCHD Director Dr. Lindsay Huse said.

The announcement says that public cooperation is vital as the DCHD has already confirmed the first sample of West Nile virus in mosquitoes in June.

“West Nile virus season has started early,” Dr. Huse said. “We need the public’s help to reduce the risk.”

Preventative measures include removing standing water, using repellents with DEET, avoiding outdoor activities at dusk and dawn, and wearing protective clothing.

You can report standing water and other risks to the DCHD Sanitation Section at 402-444-7481.
