A recent study conducted by the American Cancer Society revealed that nearly half the death cases and almost 40 percent of cancer disease cases could be prevented if people were to follow a specific lifestyle.

Cancer deaths are significantly rising among adults in the United States of America, as per recent reports. A recent study conducted by the American Cancer Society was released last Thursday which stated that nearly half the death cases and almost 40 percent of cancer disease could be prevented if people were to follow a specific lifestyle. The study, reported its research findings after looking into 30 different types of cancer and 18 risk factors of the disease. This however could be turned around by changing lifestyle choices of every individual in the country. More than 700,000 cases of cancer and 262,000 deaths have occurred in the US in as per the data from 2019. People who are at risk are mostly 30 years or above.

According to the study, cigarette smoking was cited as the leading factor contributing to almost 20 percent of the cases and 30 percent of the deaths.

What Lifestyle Changes Are Crucial As Per Study?

Quit Smoking

According to the study and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking is the leading cause of cancer and cancer deaths in the country. Cancer risk also increases if a person is exposed to secondhand smoke. It can increase the risk of different types of cancers for instance, cervical, blood, bladder, pancreas, stomach, kidney and liver. CDC states that quitting smoking can reduce the risk by many percentages.

Maintain Bodyweight

Another factor that ACS cited as a possible cause of cancer is obesity. The only way to prevent this is by maintain your bodyweight. According to CDC, obesity can increase the risk of 13 types of cancer in the US.

Limit Alcohol

Multiple researches indicate that alcohol is one major cause of cancer in the States. Even moderate drinking can be very harmful for your health and especially cause diseases like cancer.

Don’t Follow A Poor Diet

Newly released data indicates that risk of cancer increases because of poor diet. Foods like red meat, processed meat can increase the risk of cancer. Eat foods like fruits and vegetables, dietary fiber and calcium to curb the risk of cancer.

Don’t Be Physically Inactive

Physical activities are giver very less credit but in most diseases, lack of activities are one of the major causes. In case of cancer too, the risk may increase for people who lead a more sedentary lifestyle. According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, it is recommended to stay active for at least 150 to 300 minutes moderate intensity workout every week. Another alternative could be, 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity workout every week.

Limit Sun Exposure

Sun exposure is another major factor of rising cancer cases especially melanoma in the US. Experts recommend people to either limit the exposure of UV rays or take up precautions. Regular use of sunscreen is recommended as it can reduce the risk of invasive melanoma by almost 70 percent. Sunscreens are advised for other secondary reasons too for instance, skin pigmentation, wrinkles brought on by UV exposure.
