Brits divided by Olly Alexander’s Eurovision performance

Must read

The UK received zero points from the public for the song

Brits have been left divided by Olly Alexander’s performance at Eurovision this year, after the UK finished 18th in the song contest.

Eurovision 2024 took place on Saturday night, and saw Switzerland claim the title this year. Singer Nemo won with their song The Code, which was a mix of opera and hip-hop.

But it was a familiar tale of Eurovision disappointment for the UK, with Alexander finishing in 18th place with his song Dizzy.

And whilst the song got 46 points from the jury vote, it received zero points from the public.

The staging for the song was particularly bold, with the performance involving Alexander in a set designed to look like a shower room. He was joined by four dancers on stage wearing only boxer shorts, as clever choreography and camerawork made it look like they were all defying gravity at times.

During the show, UK commentator Graham Norton had gone as far to say that it was “possibly the best staging the UK has ever done” at Eurovision.

But the staging and song divided Brits at home. Whilst some thought Alexander was hard done by by the public, others reckoned the song just wasn’t up to scratch this year.

One person wrote: “So proud @alexander_olly been a fan for a long time smashed it! #Eurovision2024”

Another said: “Loving @alexander_olly and his song #Eurovision2024 #Eurovision #dizzy”

Praising his performance, a third said: “Olly sounded good! He should be proud of himself!!”

Others weren’t so sure, with someone else describing his performance as “super slick”, but adding that it felt like they were “watching a video on MTV rather than a live show in an arena.”

And some labelled Dizzy as a “dreadful” song, with one person saying they were “amazed it got any points at all.”

Alexander had caused controversy in the lead-up to Eurovision after saying that he felt “ambivalent” about the Union Jack.
