‘Bandaids’ on failing infrastructure: Caney under boil advisory after water main break

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Update: The southeast Kansas town of Caney is under a boil water advisory following a water main break on Monday.

Caney utility crews located the main water break on the north side of town, near Moss and State. They were forced to shut off the water around 4:30 p.m. on Monday to repair the break but were able to restore the water by 7:30 p.m.

City administrator Kelly Zellner attributed the incident to aging infrastructure.

“A lot of our lines are over 50 years old,” Zellner explained. “We’ve really been working on getting the water project, water lines replaced and the water system improved. That should’ve been done probably 20 years ago.”

Zellner said the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will likely lift the boil advisory on Wednesday afternoon.

Caney police said the city is without water after a leak.

Police made the announcement on Monday night after a leak at the intersection of Moss and State.

Water was shut off for the entire town until further notice.

We will provide updates as they become available.
