The infant contracted measles through international travel

A Butler County infant who’s less than a year old has measles, according to public health officials.

The baby contracted measles through international travel, returning to the U.S. through a Chicago-area airport and Ohio by car, according to an announcement made by Erik Balster, Butler County health commissioner, on Thursday.

Staff worked over the July 4th holiday to alert close contacts of the child, to notify them of their potential exposure. Those who did not receive a call from Butler County General Health District can safely assume that they were not exposed.

The most effective way of protecting yourself or your family against measles is through immunization.

Infants under a year old who are traveling are recommended to get an early dose of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine between 6 months and 11 months, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
