Archie Vaughan, the 18-year-old son of former England captain and Telegraph Sport columnist Michael, made his professional debut for Somerset in their One-Day Cup opener against Kent on Friday.

Vaughan signed professional terms with the county earlier this year having come through the academy, and made his debut for the England Under-19s’ Test team against their Sri Lankan counterparts earlier this month.

Now, he has made his first-team debut for the county at Taunton. Vaughan was carded at No 5 in a young Somerset team bolstered by the presence of England spinner Jack Leach.

Vaughan, like his father, is a stylish right-handed batsman who bowls off-spin, and is one of a number of young players who will make county debuts in the coming weeks with players away on Hundred duty. Somerset are one of the hardest-hit counties, having lost more than 10 players to the 100-ball competition.

With Kent opting to bat first, Vaughan was brought into the bowling attack with the visitors four down. Three of the wickets had fallen to spin; one to Leach and two to all-rounder Lewis Goldsworthy.
