Recent findings from ABTA indicate that this year’s particularly poor weather in the UK has driven a notable increase in people contemplating overseas vacations at the last minute this summer.

A survey shows that over 27% of respondents would be inclined to book a trip if they found a tempting deal to a warm, sunny destination. Additionally, 20% expressed a desire to flee the UK’s unfavorable weather conditions.

In a regional breakdown, residents of Scotland are most eager to exchange dreary skies for sunnier climates, with 31% considering booking a holiday to a warm locale if the price is right, and 27% motivated by the desire to escape the gloom.

This surge in interest follows a report from the Met Office stating that this spring was the wettest since 1986 for the UK, with sparse sunny days and a forecast that suggests a bleak outlook for domestic sun-seekers through August.

However, in contrast, many of Europe’s favorite holiday spots, including Costa del Sol, the Algarve, Istria, and islands like Rhodes and Crete, as well as Turkey’s southern resorts, are expecting consistent sunshine in the coming days.

ABTA encourages travelers to take advantage of remaining deals this summer, especially if they are flexible with their travel dates and destinations. They recommend consulting local travel agents or tour operators for the best options available.

ABTA Director of Communications, Graeme Buck, said:

“While many people will already have a summer holiday to look forward to, our data suggests that a significant proportion might book a late deal – particularly if the UK’s washout summer continues and they can find a well-priced break delivering some much-needed vitamin D!

“Whether looking for a quick weekend away or a couple of weeks in the sun, we’d encourage anyone who is thinking of booking a last-minute holiday this summer to speak to their local ABTA travel agent or tour operator. They can let them know which destinations still have good availability over the summer and help them find the best break for their budget.”

ABTA’s Essential Tips for Snagging a Great Late Summer Holiday:

  1. Prioritize Flexibility: Achieving the best deal often requires flexibility, such as opting for mid-week flights, choosing less popular times, or flying out from less crowded airports.
  2. Explore New Places: Keeping an open mind about your holiday destination can lead to exciting and unique vacation experiences, potentially in places you hadn’t initially considered.
  3. Utilize ABTA-Affiliated Agents or Operators: For a broad selection of holiday packages, including exclusive deals, start with an ABTA-affiliated travel professional.
  4. Opt for Package Holidays: Not only are package holidays typically more cost-effective, but they also offer convenience and security under the Package Travel Regulations, ensuring a well-protected trip.
